Vitebsk interchange is recognized as the project of the year

The launch of traffic along the Vitebsk interchange of the Western High-Speed Diameter (WSD) was named the project of the year in the field of road construction according to the edition of Delovoy Peterburg.
The start of movement along the Vitebsk interchange was given on December 22, 2024 under the leadership of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. The Vitebsk interchange opened the way for the Latitudinal High-speed Highway in St. Petersburg and became its first stage.
The interchange goes in an easterly direction from the junction with the ZSD in the area of Blagodatnaya Street, passes in an overpass over Moskovsky Prospekt and then continues to Vitebsk Avenue. The new road will provide a link between the Moskovsky and Frunzensky districts and the ZSD, and will connect the ZSD with the next stages of the ZSD, which will create continuity of high-speed traffic in the direction of the eastern districts of St. Petersburg, and subsequently the Leningrad region. By increasing the accessibility of the WSD highway for residents of the southern districts of St. Petersburg, the Vitebsk interchange also gives motorists the opportunity to quickly reach the northern districts of the city or get to the ring Road with significant savings in fuel and travel time. Being one of the main links of the transport chain bypassing the central districts of the city, the project is of key importance for the development of a high-speed transport framework.
Vitebsk interchange has six lanes, three in each direction. The total length is 2.6 km. The estimated speed is 120 km/h. A "free-flow" or "free flow" system without barriers is organized at the interchange.
It should be noted that the road is laid in cramped urban conditions — along a territory saturated with public and business buildings and communications of all kinds. During its construction, complex engineering and technological solutions were used, more than 600 drilling piles and 202 supports were installed, over 4 thousand meters of noise shields, and 20 thousand tons of metal structures were used. During the construction, two overpasses were created across the railway tracks and an above-ground pedestrian crossing.
It should be recalled that the construction of the Vitebsk interchange started in 2021, the project was implemented through a public-private partnership mechanism.
