By the end of 2023, St. Petersburg became one of the regions of Russia with high indicators of sustainable development. The interactive ESG index has been prepared by VEB.The Russian Federation and the Savings Bank. The analytical study covered 85 subjects of the Russian Federation and 218 cities of the country.
The Northern capital is recognized as one of the leaders of the "Society" and "Management" blocks. Thus, St. Petersburg scored 69.6 out of 100 points in the "Management" block, the average value for the Russian Federation is 57.8. Our city showed a high level of development of small and medium-sized businesses (74.5).
St. Petersburg has also become one of the regions with a high level of digitalization and an investment component in the economy. In addition, according to the urban environment quality index, St. Petersburg was among the cities demonstrating a steady improvement in the indicator over five years.
The ESG index allows for a qualitative analysis of territories and includes data on 16 complex factors combined into three blocks: Environment, Society and Governance. This coordinate system allows for an operational and objective assessment of the progress of territories towards sustainable development and is one of the important indicators of investment attractiveness.
The most up-to-date data from official statistics are used to calculate the index of regions, and the indicator of the "city" level includes aggregate data on feedback from residents. This makes it possible to form a multilateral assessment of the ESG potential of Russian territories, taking into account both statistical data and the perception of the population. The index data is planned to be updated annually.
