Smolny discusses transport development of St. Petersburg agglomeration

The main topic of the meeting of the Coordinating Council for the Development of the Transport System of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region was key transport and logistics projects that will serve as an additional driver of socio-economic development of the agglomeration. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Vitaly Saveliev with the participation of heads of regions, representatives of federal agencies, heads of relevant committees of the city and the region.
The meeting participants discussed the progress of transport reform, the development of suburban communications between the two regions, the construction of new road facilities and the metro, as well as the implementation of infrastructure megaprojects such as the Latitudinal High-speed Highway, the St. Petersburg–Moscow high-speed railway. Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Saveliev highlighted the importance of further development of transport communication between the regions.
"Cooperation between St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region in the development of a unified transport system is aimed at improving transport provision for citizens of both regions. It is important to continue to develop the infrastructure and transport potential of the regions. The Government of the Russian Federation supports this work and will continue to provide support in the implementation of the planned plans," said Vitaly Saveliev.
Alexander Beglov, the Governor of St. Petersburg, stressed that the joint work of the regions is primarily focused on the comfort of residents of the city and the region. The Governor also noted that the issue of transport links within the agglomeration is under the special attention of the President of Russia.
"The development of the transport system of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, as well as our entire agglomeration, is the subject of special attention of the President of Russia. This imposes special obligations on us. Convenient communication between the regions is our common priority," Alexander Beglov emphasized.
The Latitudinal high-speed Highway plays an important role in ensuring connectivity between St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. The CMMSD is intended to become one of the main links in the framework of urban highways that will connect the WSD with the Ring Road and highways in the Leningrad Region, as well as part of the updated transport corridor to Karelia, Murmansk, and Arkhangelsk.
