The main topic of the Coordination Council meeting was the development of the St. Petersburg transport hub

On September 1, 2024, a meeting of the Coordinating Council for the Development of the Transport System of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region was held in Smolny. It was attended by Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Vitaly Saveliev, Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov and Governor of the Leningrad Region Alexander Drozdenko.
The meeting participants discussed the fulfillment of the instructions of the President of Russia to improve the transport infrastructure of the two regions. At the same time, as Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Saveliev noted, the transport system of the St. Petersburg agglomeration is important for the whole country.
"St. Petersburg‑St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region are priority regions for the development of the Russian transport system. The St. Petersburg transport hub has potential, it is of great importance not only because of the densely populated region, but also as a transport hub connecting seaports and international transport corridors," said Vitaly Saveliev, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, opening the meeting.
One of the main directions of improving the transport infrastructure is the formation of a network of high-speed and continuous traffic highways, such as the latitudinal high-speed highway (SHMSD) with a bridge over the Neva River in the alignment of Faiansovaya Street and Zolnaya Street. It will run from the Western High-speed Diameter to the Ring Road and the intersection with the federal highway "Cola" and will relieve the street network in the southern zone of the city, improve communication with the Leningrad region and other regions of Russia.
High-speed highways will make it possible to bring passenger car transit traffic out of the center of St. Petersburg, and will contribute to the dynamic development of St. Petersburg districts and adjacent territories of the Leningrad Region, including in terms of daily population migration and cargo transportation.
