The ZSD has become home to the first fully automated toll payment points in St. Petersburg.

The Western High‑Speed Diameter (WHSD) is becoming even more technologically advanced. By the end of this year, all barrier toll booths will be equipped with machines. At the toll collection points on the northern section of the WHSD, located near the interchange with the Northern Ring Road and the Scandinavia highway, there are no more cashier‑operators — these points have already been switched to automatic mode.
For drivers who do not use transponders, there will be special payment acceptance devices.
The toll payment machines installed on the WHSD are designed and manufactured in Russia. This technology will allow payments to be made at a speed comparable to manual transaction processing, while eliminating errors in the calculation and classification of vehicles associated with the so‑called human factor. Thanks to the applied technology for recycling accepted banknotes, the machines require cash collection and the deposit of banknotes for giving change much less frequently.
According to the operator of the Western Special Highway – the company “Magistral Severnoy Stolitsy” – more than 94 % of drivers pass toll collection points without stopping using fast transponder lanes under green signs, using electronic trip registration devices. Of the remaining 6%, the majority use bank cards or NFC devices to pay for travel, choosing the lanes under the blue signs where payment terminals with cards and smart devices are installed. Less than 2% of transactions are made using cash - lanes with yellow signs where all types of payment are accepted are designed for such drivers. Now, with the help of vending machines, payment for travel will become faster and more convenient.
It should be recalled that the ZSD is an investment project of St. Petersburg, the first paid intra–urban high-speed highway in Russia, built under the mechanism of public-private partnership.
Today, the ZSD is the most innovative road in the city and a key element of the transport infrastructure. Thanks to the construction of the highway, the impact of traffic on historically significant sites in the central part of St. Petersburg has been reduced, and round‑the‑clock connectivity between the northern, central, and southern districts of the city has been ensured.
