SPIEF 2025: A new tram network will be built in the southern districts of St. Petersburg

On June 20, 2025, at Sberbank's booth at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, an agreement of intent was signed between St. Petersburg, Sberbank PJSC and JSC National Project Construction Group to create and operate a tram network in the southern regions of St. Petersburg along the routes: along Sofiyskaya St., Southern Latitudinal Highway, Volkhonskoye Highway and to the city- the Yuzhny satellite.
The agreement was signed by Alexander Beglov, Governor of St. Petersburg, German Gref, President and Chairman of the Management Board of Sberbank, and Alexey Krapivin, CEO of the National Project Construction Group of Companies.
The project planned under the agreement involves the development of public light rail transport in the southern regions of St. Petersburg. The new tram network will run along the route from the metro station "Shushary" along Sofiyskaya Street to Proletarskaya Street in Kolpino, along the Southern Latitudinal Highway to the transport hub "19 km" of the Gatchina railway line and the satellite city of Yuzhny, along the Volkhonskoye highway.
"We are fulfilling the instructions of the President of Russia on the development of St. Petersburg's transport infrastructure. We pay special attention to the development of public transport in the south of the city, ensuring accessibility to the technological valleys of our leading universities," the Governor emphasized. "Thanks to the agreement on the implementation of this major project, a new high–speed tram network will be created. Several branches will connect the Shushary metro station with Kolpino, the satellite city of Yuzhny and the ITMO Highpark campus. Together with the tram line from Kupchino metro station to Slavyanka, the new high-speed network from Shushar to Kolpino and the satellite city of Yuzhny will become part of a powerful framework of light rail transport in the south of St. Petersburg."
The implementation of the project will improve the transport accessibility of the Shushary metro station for residents of the Kolpinsky and Pushkinsky districts of St. Petersburg, increase the mobility of the population and the comfort of movement, and reduce travel time to the nearest metro station. The new line will also reduce the traffic load on the Kolpinsky and Pushkinsky districts' street and road networks, create high-quality modern transport links between the cities of Pushkin and Kolpino, and increase the investment attractiveness of these areas of the city.
