The first traction substations of the Slavyanka tram line have been installed

As part of the construction of the new Slavyanka tram line, work has been successfully completed on the assembly and installation of the first six traction substations necessary for the launch of the first stage - from Kupchino metro station to the tram depot in the village of Shushary. In total, 11 traction substations will need to be installed for the 21 km long line.
"Public transport is one of the priorities for the development of St. Petersburg. Over the past 5 years, we have updated the rolling stock by more than 80% and are developing environmentally friendly types of land transport. The Kupchino-Shushary-Slavyanka high-speed tram is one of Russia's largest projects to create a new urban infrastructure for public light rail transport, which are being implemented as part of a public-private partnership mechanism. By building a new branch, we are solving a strategic task - the line will not cross existing major highways, which will significantly relieve the road network," said Governor Alexander Beglov.
In the near future, the general contractor ABZ-Dorstroy JSC will begin assembling the remaining five at the second stage of construction of a large-scale infrastructure facility from the tram depot to the Slavyanka district.
Substations are a key element of the electric transport infrastructure. With their help, uninterrupted power supply will be provided to rolling stock on extended sections of the Slavyanka tram line.
The technical characteristics of the new substations meet all modern safety and energy efficiency requirements. All substations are fully automated and do not require the constant presence of personnel. The main feature is the selected equipment with a high energy efficiency class, which is controlled via its own digital channel from a single dispatch center located in the tram depot building.
The equipment will ensure reliable power supply to the tram line and create comfortable conditions for passengers.
The project provides for the construction of a tram line with a length of more than 21 km, including 3 bridges, 4 overpasses, a tram depot, bus shelters, passenger-friendly terminal stops, as well as the purchase of 22 modern low-floor trams.
The first stage of the line, from Kupchino metro station to Shushary village, is scheduled to be commissioned at the end of 2025. The fare on the Slavyanka line will be the same as on a regular city tram.
