St. Petersburg tram’s new name Kupchino to Slavyanka line project has been launched

St. Petersburg Government and «BaltNedvizhService» LLC signed the concession agreement on the tram network creation and use (operation) along «Kupchino metro station - Shushary village – Slavyanka» in St. Petersburg on October 11, 2019.

The tram will get a «popular» name: a contest starts on tram-express.spb.ru site, which implies everyone to offer own name version. The competition will run until January 31, 2020.

The new tram line will pass through Frunzensky and Pushkinsky districts of St. Petersburg and involves five elevated structures construction, including flyovers and bridges. This will help to avoid crossing the line with existing major highways, unload the road network as well as avoid traffic jams during peak hours.

New tram network creation will be extremely important for the city’s southern areas, namely in terms of making them more comfortable and accessible for citizens, according to Eduard Batanov, St. Petersburg vice-governor.

St. Petersburg Government issued a resolution on a concession agreement signing on the tram network creation and use (operation) along «Kupchino metro station - Shushary village – Slavyanka» in St. Petersburg through a public competition in August 2017. «BaltNedvizhService» LLC, founded by «ABZ-1» Companies Group and Gazprombank, was recognized as the open tender winner in May 2018.

The concession agreement provides the tram network construction and subsequent operation from Balkan square through Shushary village to Slavyanka microdistrict, including the tram depot construction and at least 15 stops creation. Besides the concessionaire must both buy and operate at least 21 rolling stock units.

The first construction stage (from Balkan square to the Shushary village) will be put into operation no later than four years from the concession agreement signing date, while the second construction stage (from Shushary village to Slavyanka microdistrict) - no later than five years from the concession agreement signing date. The tram tracks length is at least 21 kilometers. Private investment will amount to at least 25.9 billion rubles.

The maximum possible rolling stock number can be simultaneously on the line due to modern repair and maintenance technologies in the tram depot. The estimated waiting time for the tram at the final stops will be about 5 minutes, while the time on the road from Slavyanka to Kupchino metro station will be reduced by almost half, namely to 30-35 minutes.

The project provides three-section 100% low-floor trams purchase, intended for comfortable transportation at high and low temperatures. The average tram speed, including stops, will be 25 km/h. The trams will be equipped with a passenger counting system, payment and one-time tickets purchase devices, including by bank transfer, and the Internet access as well.
